I have a feeling in about 10 years, Starship
Troopers is going to be shown on Mystery Science Theater. It's just
the kind of B movie that they love to rip apart over there. But this isn't
just any B movie, this is a B movie with $100 million dollars in special
effects, and it was well worth it. In the future, Bugs from the planet
Klendathu have started throwing asteroids towards the Earth. When one crashes
into Buenos Aires, Earth fights back, trying to destroy the Bugs and prove
once and for all that humans are superior. The cast seem to be a lot of
people from Aaron Spelling TV shows. Casper Van Dien (90210), Patrick Muldoon
(Melrose) and Dina Meyer (also 90210) head this largly unknown cast. But
the center, the heart so to speak, of the film is the Bugs. The special
effects are so incredible, I commented to a friend that I was afraid that
one day soon we were going to have films without real actors, only computer
generated ones. These creatures are full of such detail it's amazing. It
almost feels like a combination of a video game and a ride at Universal
Studios. The story line kind of falters at times, you have to wait till
almost three quarters of the way to the end before you know what the true
ultimate goal of the invasion is. And there is the usual love story/love
triangle/who likes who and who is sleeping with who sub-plots that are
just unnecessary. But if you want a good, no brainer type of movie, just
something to sit back and enjoy (hopefully with digitally enhanced sound)
Starship Troopers is definitely a lot of fun
to watch.
