My Best Friend's Wedding was better
than good, but not great. Let me first say, that this movie had by far
the worst and most annoying opening credit sequence I have ever seen. That
being said, let's continue. Julia Roberts (who looks more radiant than
ever) plays Julianna, who goes to Chicago to try and break up the wedding
of her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney). Julie and Mike have been
best friends ever since college, and it's only when Mike says he's getting
married to a twenty year old college junior (Cameron Diaz (as a 20 year
old?)), that Julie realizes that she is in love with Michael. So she flies
to Chicago, becomes the maid-of-honor, and spends most of the movie trying
the break up the happy couple. The best part of the movie by far, was Julie's
gay friend George (Rupert Everett). Whenever he's on screen he steals the
show. Julie and George pretend to be engaged to try and make Michael jealous,
and George tries his hardest to embarrass Julie. The scenes in the taxi
and at the rehersal dinner are priceless. The only problem I really had
with the movie was I didn't root for Julie to break up the wedding. I understood
where she was coming from, but I had a hard time cheering for her. Cameron
Diaz's character was so innocent, that I didn't want to see her get hurt.
And maybe that was the point. My Best Friend's
Wedding is a well written, well acted film, that pulls at all
the heartstrings. Definitely the date movie of the summer. Of course the
ultimate question is, does this movie have a happy ending? That's up to
you to decide.
